October is Around the Corner

I do believe our first twenty-nine school days have gone well. The cooler temperatures this past week have been very well received by everyone, so I hope they stick around for a while.  It is hard to believe the calendar will turn to October next week. Time does pass fast!

Donut Support in the Drop-off Line

This past week, I’ve assisted with parent drop-off in the morning at our elementary schools and Early Learning Academy.  I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity, and I was assisted by our Executive Director of Schools, Dr. Erin Smith, and the many staff members at each school.  We were also able to provide a very small token of appreciation that signifies our true thoughts….“We DON’uT know what we’d do without your ongoing support!”  Our goal is to reach the other schools’ drop-off line in the near future.

Raise the Flag

At the homecoming football game this evening (9/25/26), there will be a special ceremony before the game that you won't want to miss.  The Spring Hill Education Foundation has led an effort that resulted in a new flagpole and flag at the Spring Hill stadium.  The 70’ pole and approximate 15’x25’ USA flag are going to look amazing. Once again, we are so very fortunate to have so many supporters throughout our school community.

Bond Projects Update

Bond projects have continued to remain on schedule, and those already completed have finished under budget.  More updates will continue throughout the school year.

Talented and Bright Students

I am continually amazed at how talented and bright our students are in all of their chosen endeavors.  In my previous edition, I wrote that I’d share some of our overall academic highlights as measured by various student assessments. For this edition, I am sharing how our students performed on the State Assessment for Science during the Spring 2026 semester.

Keep in mind that a student score is placed into one of four categories.  The State of Kansas goal is for ALL students to score at levels 3 (Proficient) and 4 (Advanced), which is a challenge.  Below is the percentage of our students who scored at each of the four levels.  Also, please note that only students in Grades 5, 8, and 10 take the State Assessment in Science.

It is also worth noting that in 2026, Spring Hill School District 8th-grade students performed extremely well, with 47% at level 4 compared to the Kansas overall average of 21%.

NOTEWORTHY

Fall Festival 2026

The annual Spring Hill Fall Festival and parade will be held on Saturday, September 26.  Many USD 230 students will take part in the Fall Festival Parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Our Marching Bands, along with several of our competitive teams, will participate along the parade route.

September BOE Recognitions

At the September 14 meeting, the Board of Education recognized District Substitute Coordinator Rocky Munoz with a Spring Hill Schools Core Value Award in the areas of World-Class Staff, Supportive Environment, and Engaged Community. Rocky was honored for his creative approach to substitute recruitment, which helped the district hire more than 40 new substitute teachers for the 2026–27 school year.

The Board also welcomed members of the Spring Hill Middle School Builders Club and sponsor Alec Hitchens. Students introduced the club, shared activities and highlights from its inaugural 2025–26 year, and discussed their excitement for another successful year of service.

Closing

As always, reach out anytime with thoughts or questions.

Have a great weekend, enjoy the mild temperatures, and hopefully the rain will not stick around all weekend.

(Please follow me on ‘X’ at ‘USD230Supt’.  In addition to lots of school/district highlights, any school closure is ALWAYS reported first on X. My account was hacked/deleted over the summer, and all previous followers disappeared.)
