Week of October 12-16

Good Afternoon Cavalier Families,

Thank you so much for participating in our spirit week to kick off October as Bully-Prevention Month! Although the spirit week has come to an end, our Cavaliers will continue to team up against bullying every day by choosing kindness, showing B.O.L.T behavior (Be Respectful, Observe Safety, Lead with the 7 Habits, and Take Responsibility), standing up for one another, and making sure everyone feels safe, supported, and included at DCES!

OCTOBER 30: Costume Parade and Class Fall/Halloween Party

If you are planning to volunteer, please make sure you have completed the volunteer registration.

Schedule

12:30 PM- Party Volunteers Arrive

  • Room parents and classroom party volunteers may arrive at 12:30 PM to check in, set up, and assist students with costumes.
  • Room parents will provide the office with a list of parents volunteering to help with setup or lead activities during the party. Name tags will be prepared in the office for all identified volunteers. When you arrive, please check in at the office, pick up your name tag, and then proceed to your designated pods.

12:50 PM: Visitor Sign-In Begins

  • Parents and family members attending the parade or classroom party as visitors/observers may begin signing in at the front office.
  • After signing in, visitors should proceed directly to the gym. Visitors may sit on the risers or stand along the wall.
  • Visitors and volunteers must follow the same dress code requirements as our students. Please review the elementary handbook for more details.
  • As much as possible, we kindly ask that volunteers and families attending the classroom parties make other arrangements for younger siblings.

1:35-1:55 PM-Costume Parade

  • The procession will begin with 5th Grade and continue through Kindergarten. We will call 5th Grade slightly before 1:35 PM to account for transition time heading down to the gym. Each grade will walk one lap around the gym before returning to their classrooms.
  • To maintain a clear and safe path for students, visitors will remain in the designated viewing area of the gym until the parade has concluded.

2:00-2:30 PM- Classroom Fall/Halloween Parties
Students will return to their classrooms for their parties. Parent volunteers and visitors attending the parties will transition to classrooms following the parade.

2:30-2:50- Clean-Up, Volunteer & Visitor Dismissal

  • Please assist our classrooms to ensure that all clean-up is completed by 2:45 p.m.
  • Early Sign-Out: If you plan to take your child home after the party, you may sign them out from the classroom. Each classroom will have a sign-out sheet.
  • Safety Reminder: The front entrance is the only exit available to families before regular dismissal. Please do not exit through the pod doors. This is an important student safety measure.
  • Volunteer &Visitor Dismissal: We ask that all volunteers and visitors exit the building by 2:50 p.m. Thank you for helping us transition smoothly to regular dismissal.

Costume Reminders

  • Students will not wear costumes to school. They will change into their costumes before the parade. Staff and volunteers may assist with costumes when necessary. Staff will be assigned to support Kindergarten and 1st Grade students.
  • Please choose a costume that is easy to put on, comfortable, and allows for safe movement during the parade and classroom party. Please consider the size and ease of movement of your child’s costume, including whether it will comfortably fit through classroom doors.
  • Costumes should not be overly scary and should not include images or accessories that resemble weapons, blood, or gore. Please help us keep costumes fun and age-appropriate for all of our Cavaliers.

Treats & Party Favors

  • Our school nurse will check treats being served during classroom parties for allergen safety. Due to the volume of items, individual party-favor bags cannot be individually checked.
  • Students may receive party-favor bags during the celebration; however, they may not open them until they have left school premises.

Thank you for helping us make this a safe, fun, and memorable celebration for our Cavaliers!

Check out our Cavalier feature for this week:

Our kindergarteners put their problem-solving skills to work as they programmed their Bee-Bots to follow commands and navigate their grids. These young learners are building early coding skills, one command at a time!

Our young artists explored ancient Egyptian culture while creating their own pet crocodiles! As they painted and cut their creations, students strengthened their fine motor skills and learned about the fascinating history of crocodiles as pets in ancient Egypt.

Paging all future doctors, nurses, and specialists! Our first graders brought their learning to life with Hospital Day as they wrapped up their unit on the human body. What a fun, hands-on way to celebrate their learning and put their knowledge into action! They also had a special visit from one of our parents who shared about her job and how she helps children. Our Cavaliers loved learning from Mrs. Riffel and were excited to receive a fun bandage fidget to take home!

DCES 5th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Shae Menner, Selected for Midwest STEM Alliance Initiative!

We are proud to share that Mrs. Shae Menner was selected as one of 18 elementary science teachers from Iowa, Kansas, and Minnesota to join the Midwest STEM Alliance. Backed by a $5 million National Science Foundation grant, this initiative supports rural science educators through collaboration, resources, and professional learning.

“My goal is to create genuine, memorable learning experiences. Through my work with the Midwest STEM Alliance, I would like to make more of my science lessons 3-Dimensional, as well as better integrate relevant reading and writing skills during my science block,” -Mrs. Menner.

Congratulations, Mrs. Menner, on this exciting opportunity to strengthen and elevate science instruction for our Cavaliers!

Lunch Guests: Thank you so much to all the family members who joined us for lunch! Your presence made our week extra special!

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out. We value your input and appreciate your thoughts on how we’re doing and how we can continue to improve. You may also share your feedback through our DCES Families Feedback form.

May you have a lovely weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Miller
